PTU is leaking thick gummy black oil. There is no weird noise when driving but only the propane smell on idle. I guess the unit has to be replaced but can I continue to drive it until it makes bad noise or is it dangerous and urgent to replace the unit? Re: PTU leak - How urgent? It sounds like this is what you will be needing to do. The internal oil, when it overheats, it thickens up, then gets pushed out the top vent. In theory it the PTU won't last as long as it could with this thick broken down oil. It would be wise to set up an oil change interval for the PTU similar to the engine oil change maintenance. I'm not an expert, but I am a damn nice guy But they proposed me a cheaper temporary solution. They can make a hole in the PTU in a specific place to make it drainable.
It will be easier to change oil. There was very low oil and it was greasy. It did not solve the problem and still leaks I thought it was leaking from the "overflow" but is there a seal in the PTU that we can access and replace?

When I put the car into snow mode, I could hear a low basey sound coming from the transmission, and experienced the shuttering and clunking while reversing into a parking spot.
I thought it was just traction control, due to the massive potholes in the dirt parking lot. Yesterday, my dad brought the car into the dealer to have them look at it. They said it was a PTU failure, and will be replacing it under warranty. It's surprising considering it only has 35k miles. Anyone else having this problem? Sorry to hear, Space, these failures are not uncommon. The reason is unknown, but most will attribute it to gear lube failure. The Police Interceptors are on a 30K mile schedule for gear lube changes, if that helps any.
I am of the belief that the PTU Oil should be changed within 5, miles of the unit leaving the factory then, again in the K mile range hereafter. Ford is being disingenuous with the "Lifetime Oil" statement. Well, then I'm behind on '16 SHO. I'm at about miles and have changed the engine oil 4 times so far. Simply, all involved would question how correctly the fluid change was done by dealer. I think the design of these clutches in the PTU are overheating, main reason for failure.

The Ford dealers here in California have some thing against it They all keep bringing me the copy of the service bulletin saying NOT to change it unless they disassemble the PTU and do it that way.
And only if its in need of replacement or submerged in water. What's interesting is I don't think there's even a certain mileage of when to ever replace the fluid for the life of the vehicle. Maybe its like a disposable cell phone?! They argue that if they do it from the top Ford won't warranty the work so they want to take it off, open it up and change it that way.

I've seen what a PTU looks like and that fluid doesn't look like a "Lifetime" fluid. Especially in a performance application. I am running into the same problem here in MI and same exact story as Griggs - almost identical, which suggests to me Ford is scaring the dealers They will only do the PTU by disassembling I'm beginning to think that Ford just wants us to buy new PTU's when they fail. Why else would there be no service on it unless it fails which we know is going to happen at some point.
Everything else on the car needs service like the the tranny, rear end, engine. Very peculiar to my mind. Make more money selling it to us when they fail just out of warranty.I would not flush the trans but change the fluid and filter every 50, miles or less.
